Nhu’s Story

Nhu is from the Northwestern mountainous area of Vietnam.  To provide for their family, Nhu’s parents had to work far away in Hanoi and often left Nhu and her sister home alone, with relatives only looking after them at night.

Knowing about Nhu’s family situation, men planned to attack Nhu and Nhu was abused by 3 men at different times. This abuse caused Nhu to fall pregnant when she was just 16 years old. This pregnancy impacted her health personally but once her son arrived, Nhu also struggled to look after him and make sure he had the nutrition he needed to thrive.

With funding support, Hagar helped cover the living expenses for Nhu’s family to assist them in meeting the costs of having a newborn. Hagar also provided milk, rice and dry food to make sure Nhu was getting the nutrition she needed to look after her baby.

Today, Hagar Vietnam staff report that Nhu is more open and mature than when they first met her. She is on the journey of motherhood and is getting used to a new rhythm of life. When she can, she knits as a way to earn more income for her family.

Although there are still concerns about the upcoming trial, Nhu always feels reassured because her family and Hagar are always there with her. Seeing her baby healthy and hearing his laugh are the best ‘vitamins’ for her to keep moving forward despite the difficult days ahead.”
