Privacy Policy

Hagar NZ is committed to protecting personal information and handling it in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020. The Executive Director holds the position of Privacy Officer and will notify the Privacy Commissioner of any notifiable privacy breaches where required by law.

This policy outlines:

  • our contact details
  • our general approach to handling personal information
  • what information we collect and why
  • who may receive that information
  • whether providing information is voluntary and what may happen if it is not provided
  • how supporters can opt out of further correspondence
  • how information is stored and protected
  • how people can access and correct their information
  • how concerns or complaints can be raised.

Our approach to privacy

We respect the privacy of our donors, supporters, partners and other individuals we engage with, and we recognise the trust they place in us. Our staff are required to protect personal information and handle it appropriately and confidentially.

We take reasonable steps to ensure personal information is collected, used, stored and disclosed in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020.

When we collect personal information directly from you, we aim to make clear why we are collecting it, how it will be used, who may receive it, whether providing it is voluntary, and what may happen if you choose not to provide it.

What information we collect and why

We may collect personal information such as your name, postal address, email address, phone number, donation history, and bank account or credit card details where needed to process one-off or regular donations.

We collect this information so that we can:

  • process donations and recurring gifts
  • issue receipts and tax certificates
  • respond to enquiries
  • maintain accurate supporter records
  • communicate with supporters about their donations, our work, appeals, events and other updates that may be of interest
  • better understand and improve our fundraising and communications.

In some cases, and only where appropriate, we may also collect limited additional information such as your connection to a particular organisation, event or campaign, or other information relevant to our relationship with you.

Providing personal information to Hagar NZ is generally voluntary. However, if you do not provide certain information, we may be unable to process your donation, issue a receipt or tax certificate, respond to your enquiry, or provide the service you have requested.

Your information may be accessed by authorised Hagar NZ staff and trusted service providers who support activities such as donation processing, database management, email communications, administration and technology support. We may also disclose personal information where required or authorised by law.

We do not sell or rent our database to other organisations.

Information collected indirectly

Where Hagar NZ collects personal information about an individual from a third party rather than directly from that person, we will take reasonable steps to notify the individual in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020, unless an exception applies.

This includes letting the individual know that the information has been collected, the purpose of collection, who may receive it, and their rights to access and correct their information.

Opting out of further correspondence

If you do not wish to receive fundraising or other communications from Hagar NZ, you can opt out at any time by using the unsubscribe option in our emails or by contacting our office directly.

How information is held: We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from loss, unauthorised access, use, modification, disclosure and misuse. Information may be stored securely in electronic and physical form. We retain personal information only for as long as it is needed for the purposes for which it was collected and for any legal or operational requirements. Where information is no longer required, we will securely destroy it or de-identify it where appropriate.

Access and correction: You have the right to request access to the personal information we hold about you and to ask for it to be corrected if you believe it is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date.

To request access to, or correction of, your information, please contact our office using the details below.
