There are more people in slavery right now…
than any other time in human history
Hagar exists to transform the lives of women and children in Vietnam and Cambodia who have survived trafficking, slavery and other severe forms of abuse. Some of the global facts that motivate us and our donors are:
The 2021 Global Estimates indicate that 49.6 million people are in modern slavery on any given day, either forced to work against their will or in a marriage that they were forced into.
This number translates to nearly one of every 150 people in the world
That’s more than at any other time in history
Forced labour accounts for 27.6 million of those in modern slavery and forced marriage for 22 million.
3.3 million of those people in forced labour are children
The Asia Pacific region is host to more than half the global total of those in forced labour
Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world
More than 1 in 5 Cambodian men aged 18-49 admit to having raped a woman according to UN research
Since Hagar’s establishment in 1994, we have walked the journey with over 33,000 of women and children who have survived one or more of these severe forms of abuse. Hagar staff have met each of these survivors in a season of their lives where they are broken and traumatised. Together with our donors, we have provided comprehensive recovery services and done whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to see these survivors thriving. We also educate communities on how to prevent and recognise trafficking and other forms of abuse.
As we raise awareness in New Zealand about these global issues, we always find people who want to know more about human trafficking and slavery particularly. Click the buttons below to have your questions answered!
