Mai was one of the first clients that Hagar Vietnam worked with when they started providing recovery services in 2009.

Mai was traumatised after experiencing domestic violence, and with Hagar’s assistance, she gradually overcame the trauma of her painful past and became more independent and self-sufficient. With Hagar’s help, Mai had the opportunity to receive vocational training, and gained employment at a restaurant. Although the work was hard and her income was not high, Mai worked very hard to support her son and make sure that he could attend high school.

However, when the COVID pandemic struck Vietnam, Mai lost her job and was unable to provide for the basic needs of her son and herself. Every day that passed, she had to live in panic and worry about whether she and her son would have food to eat tomorrow.

Holding fast to the mission of walking “the whole journey” with our clients, even though Mai’s case had been closed for nearly 2 years, a Hagar Vietnam Case Manager followed up with Mai amidst the pandemic and provided food assistance to meet their immediate needs. Understanding the stress and fears of being unemployed, the Case Manager quickly connected Mai with access to the support packages offered by the Government of Vietnam, and provided guidance on how to prepare and submit the administrative documents to receive this support.

Because of her ongoing relationship with Hagar and the support we have been able to offer, Mai has experienced relief from the gripping stress and anxieties she was having.

Hagar pursues the highest degree of care and protection for each of its clients. To protect the identity of our clients, names have been changed and images do not necessarily represent the individual profiled.
