On April 22nd 2021, some wonderful young people in Christchurch came together to walk 27km to raise awareness of and funds for Hagar’s work. Why 27Km you ask? Because one person every 27 seconds is sold into slavery somewhere around the world.

Each of these young people are participating in our youth programme this year having heard about Hagar’s work and making the decision to join us in transforming lives.

Joined by some family and friends throughout the day, these 10 set off from the Sydenham Salvation Army at 9:30 in the morning on the mission to walk to Sumner and back again. As a group they wanted to try and inspire as much in donations as possible and to try and raise extra funds, some of the girls even wore wedding dresses for the whole walk! Anna, from the Hagar team, met them in Sumner with some hot chips and by 4:30pm, the very tired and sore crew returned to the Salvation Army having completed that significant distance.

We were so grateful to everybody who participated and for the physical pain that they all pushed through for the sake of raising awareness about our work. But what was super exciting was the amount this group managed to raise! At a final count, they raised $10,118 for our work!

Each of the people who participated in this walk are further examples of the fact that everybody can do something to tackle the issues of human trafficking and slavery. It is only because of people like them, and all of our wonderful donors and volunteers, that we can transform the lives of some of the world’s most traumatised.
