Lily had already experienced more hardship than most.
After losing both her parents
she was left without protection, living with a disability that made her especially vulnerable. Then one day, a man from her own neighbourhood attempted to assault her. Days later, he returned and succeeded.
What followed was not justice.
instead of legal action, the case was resolved informally within the community. Money was exchanged. The perpetrator faced no real consequences.
Lily was left to carry the trauma alone.
But this is where something different began.
Through the SAFE programme, a neighbour reported the case. A Village Development Committee member intervened. Hagar’s partner, YKBWA, stepped in to provide counselling, food support, and safety improvements to her home.
For the first time, Lily was not alone.
Her story shows a difficult truth, that systems do not always work. But it also shows what is possible when communities are equipped to respond.
