Roum Tola

Empowering Youth to Build Safer Communities

Battambang Province, Cambodia — At just 19 years old, Ms. Roum Tola, the CYG Team Leader at Chrey Commune, is already making a meaningful impact in her community.

“I love my village and want all children to live peacefully and safely,” Tola shared. “I hope parents and local authorities can work together to prevent abuse and help families find jobs close to home. This way, parents don’t have to migrate far, which often affects children’s wellbeing.”

The ongoing social and economic changes in Battambang have deeply affected children and youth. Many families struggle to meet their basic needs, and young people often lack platforms to share their concerns. As a youth leader, Tola works to ensure their voices are heard by local and provincial authorities so real action can follow.

“Our goal is to bring these issues to the relevant government departments for recognition and support,” she explained.

Working alongside NGOs and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) organisations, Tola and her peers focus on prevention activities and building opportunities for survivors and vulnerable families. “Through these partnerships, we can help families start small businesses, gain new skills, and strengthen their livelihoods,” she shared.

Tola also believes that the private sector plays an essential role in community development by offering internships, supporting vocational skills, and participating in prevention initiatives. “These efforts support survivors of human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and gender-based violence, as well as returned migrant workers seeking new opportunities,” she said.

For Tola, Family Economic Empowerment is one of the most effective ways to prevent abuse and unsafe migration. “It starts with soft skills training and community prevention activities focused on income generation and sustainable livelihoods,” she noted. “Programs like those implemented by Hagar in Chrey Commune and Mong Resey have already helped many families find local jobs or start their own income-generating activities.”

Tola’s leadership reflects the strength and vision of Cambodia’s youth. Her commitment to creating safer, more resilient communities shows that when young people are empowered, real change begins at the heart of the village.
