Help shape modern slavery law in New Zealand

The Modern Slavery Bill

What happens next: Help shape modern slavery law in New Zealand

The Modern Slavery Bill has passed its first reading in Parliament with 112 votes in favour. This is the furthest modern slavery legislation has progressed in New Zealand, with strong cross-party support. This is a long time coming for the many New Zealanders who have pushed for stronger action. Your voice, your advocacy, and your support have helped bring this moment forward.

Why this matters for Hagar

we work alongside survivors of human trafficking, slavery, and exploitation. We see the long-term impact of these crimes, and the importance of systems that prevent harm before it happens.

Legislation like this helps create accountability and strengthens the environment in which prevention, protection, and recovery can happen.

If passed, the Modern Slavery Bill would introduce:

  • Mandatory reporting on modern slavery risks for large organisations
  • Greater transparency for consumers and investors through a public register
  • Stronger support for survivors
  • Improved national data and accountability

The Bill now moves to Select Committee, where it will be scrutinised in detail.

This is the stage where New Zealanders can make submissions and help shape what the final legislation looks like. Public submissions are one of the most direct ways to influence this law.

Submissions are open until Thursday 28 May.

How you can take part

We are working alongside others across the sector to strengthen this Bill,
including advocating for due diligence requirements to ensure organisations take responsibility for risks in their supply chains.

Our commitment

Your support enables Hagar to continue working alongside survivors and advocating for stronger systems that prevent exploitation. This is one way we can extend that impact here in New Zealand.
