As an artist, I love being creative. After a visit to the Solomon Islands, I was moved by the level of poverty I witnessed as well as the widespread abuse of women, especially sexual exploitation and human trafficking. I wanted to do something to make a difference for survivors of these abuses.
An idea began to formulate in my mind. I set out to obtain donations of high-end interior design fabric samples and remnants, the end of bolts and the like, with the purpose of selling both the fabric and sewn products made from the fabric. Once I began this venture, women skilled at sewing began to join me, along with other volunteers who helped with sorting and sales.
It was exciting to watch this small venture becoming a successful method of fundraising, and so Gifts for Good was set up as a charity. We give away 100% of the profits and it’s success is due to the wonderful volunteers who donate their time and expertise. We have also been donated a permanent space at Gracecity Church in Greenlane, where we have a container store open to the public on Wednesdays from 12pm – 2pm. Please visit us!
We here at Gifts for Good are so thankful that we have been able to raise funding to help Hagar projects in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, including HOPE Trust in the Solomon Islands, supporting the recovery of survivors of slavery, trafficking, and abuse.
I could not have done this alone. The friendship and connection I experience with GFG volunteers is something I value. Together, we achieve an amazing outcome of making it possible for survivors of abuse to heal from their trauma and be empowered to thrive in a future filled with hope.
We at Hagar wish to thank Juliet and the Gifts for Good voluenteer for their dedication to raise awareness and support for the survivors of abuse and trafficking. Visit the Gifts for Good website at: www.giftsforgood.nz
