On Sunday 2 November, Desiree Scanlan will proudly take on the Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Marathon with a mission that goes far beyond the finish line. She is running to raise vital funds and awareness for Lift by Hagar, an organisation working in Thailand to combat child sex trafficking and provide survivors with the protection, aftercare, and support they deserve.

Desiree’s decision to run was born out of a moment of deep inspiration. After hearing Lucy Oliver, Olympian and social worker, share about her visit to Lift by Hagar and the vulnerable children she met, Desiree felt compelled to act. The stories of resilience and the urgent need for support struck her heart, sparking a determination to do something tangible to help.

By committing to the marathon, Desiree is not only challenging herself physically but also standing in solidarity with survivors. Every kilometre she runs is a step toward hope, justice, and freedom for children who deserve to grow up safe.

Through this fundraiser, Desiree hopes to rally friends, family, and the wider community to join her in making a difference. Together, we can ensure that survivors in Thailand receive the care and protection they need, while sending a powerful message that exploitation has no place in our world.
