The Story of Srey Mey*

Srey Mey (a pseudonym to protect her privacy) is the fourth daughter in a family of six children. Growing up in poverty in Banteay Meanchey Province, her family struggled to meet even their basic needs. At just six years old, she dropped out of school and followed her parents to Thailand for work. When they returned to Cambodia, her father continued fishing, but his aggressive behavior led to ongoing violence at home. In early 2023, he was arrested for serious domestic violence against his wife and children.

Referred to Hagar by local authorities, Srey Mey and her family began receiving emergency assistance, health care, counselling, and small business support. She expressed her strong desire to return to school, and Hagar helped her re-enroll in a local state school.

“Previously, my life was in a terrible situation. I lived with fear and often ran away from home. Thanks to Hagar’s teacher, I now have hope again. I am happy because I can go back to school, and my family has enough food,” Srey Mey shared with a smile.

Her mother also reflected: “I am so happy for the support from Hagar. I can now grow vegetables and sell them in the local market. I earn income, buy food for my children, and pay off our debts. I am grateful to Hagar for helping our family have a safer and better life.”

Today, Srey Mey is back in school, her mother is earning an income, and the family is rebuilding with hope for the future.
