What we do

Heal, Empower, Prevent, Influence & Partner

Hagar donors and staff work together to both help individuals who have survived severe abuse overcome their trauma and reduce the existence of human trafficking, slavery and abuse.

Hagar provides survivors with:

• Long-term tailored support

Survivors know that they can count on us for as long as the need. When a survivor comes to Hagar, a needs assessment is completed. From there, they are assigned a case manager who will organise the required support services for them for as long as its required. We don’t have a copy and paste version of a recovery plan, but one which changes to accommodate the needs of each survivor throughout their whole individual journey.

• Safe accommodation

We ensure that every survivor we work with is within a safe environment throughout their healing journey. We place them in loving foster families and communities where possible, and empower them to live semi-independently when they are ready.

• Trauma counselling

Our counsellors are trained in methods aligned with international best practice. Hagar is renowned for our trauma-informed care approach and provides training to other organisations.

• Medical care

For some of our survivors, it is necessary for them to visit the doctor at some stage through their recovery journey. For some, it is their first time ever visiting the doctor or dentist and Hagar covers these costs.

• Legal support

Our team will explain to survivors their legal rights and guide them through the entire court process if they wish to take their perpetrator to court. We work alongside survivors before and after legal proceedings. We see justice!

• Education

We know that education is important, and that’s why we make sure that every survivor can receive an education. We provide schooling through some of our projects, connect survivors with other providers, and even support some to go to university.

• Job training and placement

Hagar has relationships with many local businesses. When they are ready, survivors are encouraged to consider what profession they might like to move into and Hagar organises work placements and training for them.

All of Hagar’s programmes come under the following 5 pillars:

We support survivors (particularly women and children) to heal through access to consistent, quality social services

We seek to empower and equip survivors at community, national, and international levels to actively contribute to society and the economy

We strengthen prevention efforts to reduce trafficking, slavery and abuse

We want to influence change at national and international levels

We seek to build the capacity of our partners to deliver trauma-informed care to survivors
