The 1445 Challenge

What is this all about?

The length of the Chinese/Vietnamese border, a known spot of human trafficking, is 1445km. Although now stopped, China’s one child policy has resulted in a great gender imbalance in China, with there now being millions more men than women of marital age. As a consequence, human traffickers are travelling into bordering countries (like Vietnam) and luring women into China (often under the false pretence of employment opportunities) and selling them as brides.

To raise money for Hagar Vietnam and their work with women who have been trafficked to China, or survived other forms of severe abuse, Hagar supporters in New Zealand are coming together and championing their own fundraisers during October that all have something to do with the number 1445. Whether it be travelling 1445km or making 1445 items of something, this challenge is all about doing an activity based on that signifiant number and fundraising to support Hagar’s work in this space.

What are people getting up to in 2021?

Hagar supporters are doing all kinds of fun challenges that incorporate the number 1445 to raise funds for Hagar’s work in Vietnam! Meet some of our 2021 participants below.

Friends Elizabeth and Sammy are getting a group together and setting out with the goal of collectively walking 1445km over the month of October.

Cathy is using her love of baking for good and setting out with the goal of baking and selling 1445 (!) cookies on October the 15th and 16th in Wellington. YUM!

Ali and Meg from Christchurch are planning on getting a group of their cycling buddies together and riding 1445km collectively from Sumner to Rangiora on Saturday October the 30th!

Hagar Vietnam

100% of the funds raised through all of the 1445 activities will be sent to our projects in Vietnam.

Dedicated to seeing the lives of survivors of trafficking, slavery and other forms of abuse transformed, Hagar staff in Vietnam provide a range of holistic recovery services to help their clients overcome the trauma of their experiences. In addition to providing these services, Hagar staff work in communities to raise awareness about abuse and run a series of prevention initiatives. You can read stories and more about what the team have been achieving in recent months on our Vietnam project page!

Stories of Transformation

Disclaimer: 100% of all funds raised through 1445 challenges will be sent to Hagar’s projects in Vietnam where they will be directed into the areas where funding is most needed. This means that not all funds raised will necessarily be directed to helping survivors of trafficking and forced marriage in China specifically, but could also be used to support the recovery journey of others who have survived extreme abuse or our prevention initiatives.
