Financial independence brings a whole lot of dignity. Because it isn’t just about a pay cheque (though that is important too). Business – social or otherwise – is about dignity. It’s about individuals having the opportunity to take control of their futures, build their confidence, express themselves, and form meaningful relationships with a wider community. It is a place to support oneself and build social capital.

To this end, Hagar partners with and invests in local businesses that provide safe and supportive work environments for women and youth who may have no work experience and are still recovering from past trauma.

In Cambodia, many women and youth have their first formal work experience at Hagar Catering and Facilities Management.

Hagar’s enterprise partner in Vietnam is Joma Bakery Café which provides training and employment for clients.

Solar Stoves in Afghanistan

With the sun beaming down on Afghan soil more than 300 days a year, Starlight, a social enterprise in Afghanistan, is capitalizing on the opportunity with solar technology.

Not only do Starlight’s solar-powered stoves provide a healthy and sustainable means to cook for Afghan households, they have also opened the doors of opportunity for vulnerable women in the country, including women from Hagar. Through Starlight, women gain the skills they need to live independently.

Interview with Nathan, co-founder of Starlight.
